How Not To Change A Rotring Rapidograph Cartridge

Broken Rotring Nib

When the time came to change the cartridge in my favourite Rotring pen, I was pretty sure it’d be no problem. I’d chosen to get the Rapidograph pens to save fiddling around with bottles of ink; all I had to do is change the cartridge. Easy! Unfortunately, it was anything but that…

I struggled for some time trying to separate the nib from the cartridge by hand but couldn’t get a grip on the nib. I searched the internet for methods but found none and so proceeded to my toolbox (as you would, you know) and tried to hold the nib with the pliers whilst pulling the cartridge out. I ended up slipping, cracking the nib into the side of the sink and above is the result. A half-snapped nib with the little 0.18mm wire sticking out. It’s just not ideal.

Update! I now know the correct method for changing the cartridge and so decided to update this post since I know a few people have stumbled upon it via google. The way to do it is to screw the nib (with cartridge attached) into the top of pen and then with the nib securely held in place, you can pull out the old cartridge.
